Why this matters
Understanding how math courses connect helps families plan ahead and spot gaps early.
Grades 6–8
Ontario's elementary math curriculum was revised in 2020. It is organized into strands that include number, algebra (including coding), data, spatial sense, and financial literacy, along with social-emotional learning skills.
Grade 9
Grade 9 math is a single de-streamed course (MTH1W) introduced in 2021. All students take the same course, which builds a shared foundation for later pathways.
Grades 10–12
From Grade 10 onward, students choose course types such as academic, applied, university preparation, college preparation, and workplace preparation. Choices in Grade 10 and 11 affect which Grade 12 courses are open.
General study advice
- Review foundational skills like fractions and integers before high school.
- Keep a notebook of worked examples.
- Ask for help as soon as a topic feels shaky.
Curriculum details should always be confirmed on the Ontario Ministry of Education website, as courses are updated over time.
